Bad Mitterndorf

Styria (Steiermark) is the second largest of the nine Austrian federated states, covering 16,401 km². It borders Slovenia as well as the other Austrian states of Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Burgenland, and Carinthia. The population is over 1.2 million people. The capital city is Graz with approximately 265,000 inhabitants.

Located in the centre of Austria, in between the Dachstein massif and the Totes Gebirge lies the area of Ausseerland-Salzkammergut. In the south of this magnificent nature reserve lies the cosy town of Bad Mitterndorf right next to the Tauplitzalm.

Even just on the way there, the magnificent, varied nature the area has to offer will surprise you. Bad Mitterndorf is fabulously situated in imposing mountainous surroundings. Bad Mitterndorf (Bad meaning bath) is a spa town and it therfore has extensive spa facilities in addition to a public swimming pool, a skating rink and several tennis and squash courts.

The fabulous Tauplitzalm ski resort is just as beautiful as the extensive cross country skiing trails in the valley below. Bad Mitterndorf with its healing mineral baths and health centres has been a spa town since 1972.

Ski resort Tauplitz / Bad Mitterndorf

Much more than a mere mountain…

Our ski resort is situated on a sunny plateau, in a predominantly alpine setting, and is mainly above the tree line. The naturally-ending runs satisfy all your needs, and are perfect for every taste and ability. Sweeping slopes offer ample room to manoeuvre for wonderful carving curves. Our mountains, which top 1,965 m, have plenty of natural snow and space for breathtaking deep powder ski-runs.

Snow guaranteed

The convenient geographical position ensures that Tauplitz is a safe bet for snowy conditions –and one of the snowiest resorts in the Alps. Our records show snow heights of up to 5 metres on a regular basis, and over 3 metres is the rule even in March, a solid basis for sunny skiing. We also use modern snow machines, and can thus guarantee snowy conditions from the beginning of December until the end of April.

Modern facilities

The lifts on the alp plateau (6 chairlifts at Lawinenstein, 4 chairlifts at Schneiderkogel, the double drag lift at Großsee etc.) were refurbished during a modernisation programme entitled “The new Tauplitz”, which was implemented from 2001-2003. In the meantime, the Lawinenstein and Schneiderkogel slopes have also been extensively developed. We introduced an ultra-modern snow machine for the popular Tauplitz ski-run in 2005.

Friendly locations

The village on the Tauplitz alp, built at 1,650 m above sea level, with around 1,000 guest beds, cosy huts and restaurants, is unique – there’s nowhere in Austria like it! The alp is car-free in winter, which doesn’t only please the kids! The attractive mountain village of Tauplitz, situated at 900 m above sea level, is located directly by the mountain cableway’s valley station. Those who enjoy shopping trips and evening entertainment will delight in a trip to the attractive resort of Bad Mitterndorf.

At the heart of the Salzkammergut region, in the centre of Austria, lies the captivating World Heritage region of Dachstein Salzkammergut. The unique combination of the culture and settlement with breath-taking natural views won the region the UNESCO title of ‘historic cultural landscape of Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut’ as a World Natural Heritage and Wold Cultural Heritage site.

Discover the fairytale world of the Ice cave and follow in the footsteps of the cave researchers through the Mammut Cave and Koppenbrüller Cave. Feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins on the 5fingers viewing platform and relax with a comfortable walk to the Heilbronner Cross.

Not for the faint-hearted! The 5fingers viewing platform offers an adrenaline rush at the highest level. This is probably the most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps and reaches out like a hand over the 400 m drop. Over 5 platforms (the Five Fingers), each in a different design, you can put your head for heights to the test and enjoy unique views down over Hallstatt, the Hallstättersee lake and the inner Salzkammergut region.

Accompanied by experienced cave guides, you can explore the magical underground world of Dachstein. The spectacular ice sculptures, gigantic ice curtains and impressive giant icicles never fail to captivate with their special magic! A mystical cave of ice and rock which enchants even the youngest guests of magical cave.

The picturesque village on the lake with the same name owes its existence to the rich salt deposit of salt in the mountain of Hallstatt. Barely anybody could rob Hallstatt of its seemingly raw charm. Wedged between the Hallstaetter See and the steep, towering cliffs of the Salzberg, Hallstatt has been a part of the UNESCO Cultural Landscape “Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut”. More information

Bad Aussee

Next to Bad Mitterndorf lies the town of Bad Aussee which is home to many exquisitely preserved listed buildings and statues. Bad Aussee provides a view of Loser mountain which is 1,883 metres high. The Panoramastrasse there leads to a restaurant located 1,600 metres up which is also a great place to start a walk to, for example, the Augtsee, a mountain lake. There is also an Alpine flower garden there that features 400 species of Alpine flower.

Bad Ischl

Another town in the area is Bad Ischl which was an imperial spa. Almost all the former emperors went there to take a ‘cure’, even Prince Franz Joseph.
